Nigerian NOLLYWOOD actor Chris Nkulor, has passed on.The actor had earlier this month been diagnosed of a kidney ailment, and this was what led to his demise.
The Abia State born actor starred in quite a lot of movies, some of which include Battle of Indemnity (2007), Hidden Treasure (2008) and Hidden Treasure 2 (2008).
About a month ago, a campaign to help the actor raise N3M for his kidney treatment at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital at Ile-Ilfe, Nigeria, was launched.
May his soul rest in peace.
Popular actor, Chinedu Ikedieze, aka Aki, had a tough time fielding questions from school children at the ongoing World Book Capital event in Port Harcourt, capital of Rivers State.
During the ‘Celebrities Read to Children’ segment of the event, at the Royal Banquet Hall of Hotel Presidential on Tuesday, one of the pupils in attendance, a youngster of about eight years, sent the guests rocking with laughter when he asked, “Why is Aki so short?”
But barely concealing his embarrassment, Aki patiently explained to the pupil that he was created that way. “If you look around, you will see that some people are tall and others are short, even shorter than I am. I am short because God has created me this way,” he said.
Meeting the actor for the first time, some of the pupils were so excited they literally pelted him with more questions. They wanted to know his actual age, if his alter-ego – Osita Iheme aka Pawpaw – was his blood brother and how he got the pseudonym, Aki.
To the youngster who wanted to know his age, he said, “I am a full adult. All I can say is that I am above 20 years. I am in my 30s. When I was as young as you, one of my favourite actors was an American known as Gary Coleman. He was so short that I used to think he was a boy. I never knew he was a man.”
Regarding his relationship with Pawpaw, Aki told his young ‘tormentors’ that fate brought them together. “I am from Abia State and he is a native of Imo State. We never knew each other before until fate brought us together through Nollywood,” he said.
The actor advised another pupil, who wanted to know how he could become a Nollywood actor, to get good education first. He said, “The door to Nollywood is wide open and ready to admit anybody. But you need to go to school first.
If you go to school, you will have a solid foundation. Most young people that are just going into Nollywood are not aware that they have to give 70 per cent of their time to education and only 20 per cent to acting. Education will help you become good actors and actresses.”
Aki concluded his short ‘sermon’ by adding that despite dividing his time between his studies as a Mass Communications student of the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu and acting in Nollywood movies, he had managed to graduate with good grades.
Also, Nollywood actress, Patience Ozokwor, stunned the audience when she revealed that she had eight children. She said that while four of them were her biological children, the rest were adopted. “But I have become so used to them that I don’t regard them as my adopted children,” she added, referring to the latter.
When asked why she always played the part of the ‘wicked’ woman in the movies, she replied, “I can’t get tired of answering this same question all the time. Well, I think it is because producers and directors discovered that I play such roles very well. Incidentally my fans seem to enjoy seeing me play the role of a bad woman,” she said.

Nollywood celebrated its 20th anniversary recently. At other times, the occasion would have been marked with much partying, probably round the year. But things are far from being rosy for the industry at present.
Many challenges, including piracy, absence of structured distribution networks and a string of scandals trailing some of its star players, are threatening to rob the industry of its glory. While these issues are not new, they have taken a toll on the fortunes of some actors and actresses
Over the last few years, the effect of the dip in Nollywood’s fortunes on some practitioners, especially the pioneers, has become a subject of debate and concern for stakeholders.
Before now, a good number of the screen stars found consolation in endorsements by corporate organisations, especially telecomunication companies like Globacom & MTN. But the business world is fast shifting its love to musicians.
Although some of their fans have come to realise that Nollywood movies ‘no longer sell’, a number of these stars, who themselves are obviously experiencing hard times, cover up by constantly hyping themselves.
But Nollywood star, Ramsey Noah, has burst their bubble.
Noah, whose acting career kicked off when he starred in the Nigerian TV soap opera Fortunes in the 1990s, is saying it as it is for the first time.
The actor was one of the panelists at the recently held Nigerian Entertainment Conference. He did not mince words when painting the true picture of the situation in Nollywood.
He says, “Many Nigerian actors live on their past glory. The truth is that many of us (actors) don’t make money from film-making or movies any longer. There is the show part, but there is actually no business side to Nollywood any longer.
“Many of these actors depend on and make their money from acquaintances. So, they simply depend on those who appreciate their works and then introduce them to other sources of income aside acting.”
The actor whose Globacom endorsement deal was terminated in 2013, alongside that of Rita Dominic, Uche Jombo, Mike Ezuruonye, Monalisa Chinda, Nonso Diobi and Odunlade Adekola, adds, “Some people who appreciate you for who you are and for your talent will then try to establish business links that can sustain you and your family.”
Judging by the number of factions that currently exist in Nollywood and the current leadership tussle within the Actors Guild of Nigeria, it is not difficult to tell that the actors are somewhat divided amongst each other.
Noah appears to confirm this when he notes, “The truth about creative people is that they lack unity. It is very hard to find unity among them. It has nothing to do with Nollywood, in particular.
“In Nollywood all you have is the show part but not the business. We lack structure. There is no balance. It is almost as if we sold our birthrights to the wrong people. Nollywood is capital — intensive and we are aware that improvements are needed, but we lack the structure to make this happen.”
Even as The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has approved a 12-man committee of Nollywood stakeholders (this will pave the way for Nigerian entries to be considered for the Oscars in 2015), Nouah is optimistic that the future is not entirely bleak for Nollywood.
He says, “Hopefully this digital era will bring about positive changes in the outlook and technology of some of our movies. I would love the situation where creative minds put the right structures in place for the industry and then things will get better.
“I suggest that the Federal Government should impose heavy taxes on DVDs/VCDs producers so as to curb piracy. There is a need for the right structure, in addition to marketing and promotions, to propel Nollywood.”

She was the founder of BoBTV Film, Television Programmes Expo, Top Radio 90.9FM, Amaka Igwe Studios, and the newly launched Q-Entertainment Network.
She was a visionary and pioneer of modern Nigerian TV drama and film, who first hit national limelight with the award-winning TV soap “Checkmate’’ and “Fuji House of Commotion’’.
Her Nollywood productions include “RattleSnake’’ and “Violated’’.
Igwe studied Education and Religion at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife.
She worked as a lecturer at the Anambra State University of Technology and had a brief stint in the oil and gas sector, before she settled down in the motion picture industry.
You’re a veteran in the industry, when did you start acting?
First of all, my name is John Okafor, Mr Ibu and I hail from Ezeokwe in Nkanu West Local Government, Enugu State. My first experience on camera was 1978 December 3. It was a soap opera in Benin City. A soap opera they called Hotel de Jordan. I was just a passerby and then they called me to be part of it, part of the crowd. My face wasn’t even showing but I was comfortable, I was contented being part of that big work.
Why did you decide to become an actor?
That is the bone breaker. I had nothing in mind before when all of us were in school, from elementary school to secondary school. Then I didn’t really have something in mind I was going to be but I know I was having medicine in my mind. At the end of the day, when I came across the camera, I was so crazy about watching people doing things on television. I said well maybe I will diversify and that’s exactly how I found myself here
How has your acting career been so far?
The career has been so interesting and we’re enterprising. Very fantastic, I must confess. The industry has made me 99.9% of who I am today. It’s a very wonderful constituency and I am happy to be a part of it.
Have you won any awards?
Yes. I was the first Nigerian to win the best comedy actor in English films in Africa in London. That was 2002/2003. I also won the .same thing 2005 in Germany (Best Comedy Actor in English films in Africa). Then the same 2005, the first national comedy award in Nigeria, I won it.
In 2006 also, I won it, organized by Virgin Productions or something. It was all about national thing. So I won it two times consecutively 2005 and 2006 and then my film was the best film of the year that same year. Other awards, I have City people awards, a whole lot of them. I have plaques in my house.
What is the name of the movie you’re shooting now?
Well, the reason why we don’t want to expose the name of the movie is because we have virus in the industry and this virus which is piracy, means we try as much as we can to make sure we conceal the title of the movie otherwise, once they get hold of the title, they would go further before we even start.
How was it like working with the cast and crew?
The cast and crew we have here, I will give them 99.9% in attitude, in presentation, in accuracy, communication I will give them 50% and then welfare, I will give them 40% and then caring, I would give them 100%. Acting generally, I would give them 80% so the cooperation is fine. They have pass mark.
mr-ibu111You’ve been in Nollywood for a while now. What is your general view of the industry?
The industry is not really giving us what we expect now because when we started with the heavyweights, there was a lot of network guarding the industry. But unfortunately as the thing proceeds like this, we begin to discover that people who are not supposed to be in the industry are here and they are making the whole journey very steep for us. However, we believe in God.
The industry has not stopped. We are still going further and the more we go further, the more we learn more things and we are beginning to use more than one camera in a production unlike before, we used only one camera. Today, we can use like 2, 3. The white men, they use like 100 cameras, 50 in one production. I was involved in one in Germany, we used 20 cameras at a role. However, I’m not trying to measure or probably compare our own production with them but the issue is that we are growing
If you could change one thing in Nollywood, what would it be?
I will definitely change the system of distribution because the distribution system here is very poor. We have only 3 major outlets while we have about 36 states and FCT. If you do a movie and an approximate of about 3,000 copies are sold in each of the states, count how many you’re going to sell. But we are bent on buying the pirated copies and then trying to view it for free, waiting for DSTv to show it and all that, so it is actually dragging us down.
You recently celebrated the dedication of your first son?
That’s not my first son, my first son is 24 years, my second son is 21 and the other one is 19 and then my smallest son is almost a year.
So you have 4 kids total?
4 boys. It was 5 but I lost one to kidnappers.
What attracted you to your wife?
She’s beautiful, face of Imo State then. So I decided to look for beauty because I want to see a contrast
What More should fans expect from Mr Ibu?
I’m still on location. I’m still doing what I’m doing. Let them keep praying and I will never disappoint them by the special grace of God and I’m advising those who are greedy, who are coming to the industry all because of money, come into the industry, work on your face first, discover who you are in the industry, learn, ask questions, get the proper thing to do then before the money would come in.
You won’t even know when the money starts coming. And then I advise those girls that pay for roles, if you’re one of those that go to producer, director to give money to get roles, you will never get out of this industry. You will never see the light of the day. Leave that thing. Go ahead and allow God to give you your own position in the industry. Keep doing what you’re doing. The one that is yours is yours, the one that is not yours, forget about it.
Do not go and give your body because of roles. Do not go and give money because you want to get a role in a production. That is not how the industry grows. If you pay, they will give you something you’re going to do, you’re not going to be anybody. The industry is like a spirit. They will reject you immediately you begin to pay yourself in.
What is going to happen to those who are studying Theatre Arts in the University? What will they do when they come out? Will they be paying for roles again or will they be paying for having spent time in school to learn or will they be paying for serving you? I’m angry about that. I don’t want to go further about that.

Nigerian Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw, on Thursday said that butts implant were very dangerous and urged people to desist from it and engage in exercise instead.
Henshaw recently took to her Instagram account page to sound a fearful warning to ladies who want their butts enlarged through implant or some other cosmetic means.
“Ladies please be happy with the body you have, but if you are not, do something about it. Exercise! Get fit! There is no short cut!
“Butts implant that goes bad could be very dangerous and worse than what you were running away from,” she shared on the social medium.
Henshaw, who is well known for her unique acting skills and candid expression of her thoughts and mind, said that butt implant was one of a few procedures that she believed people should not have.
In the same vein, American music superstar, Jennifer Lopez, told an Australian radio station that she does whatever it takes to keep herself in shape as long as that doesn’t include plastic surgery.
Asked if she would ever consider getting butt implants when she’s older or should her bottom lose its shape, the singer, who has a song called “Big Booty” on her new album, totally shot the idea down.
“No. I can’t do it. I can honestly say that’s a big no,” she said.
“You know, I’ve always been quite an athlete, and when I was young I used to run track and do tennis, everything.
So for me, it’s always about getting out to the gym or getting outside or whatever it takes to just kind of keep it together.”
Lopez said she’ll stick to eating healthy and working out, adding that while you “don’t have to go crazy, you don’t have to be a fanatic”; it’s all about upkeep.
She said she was too terrified of surgery to even think about undergoing any kind of cosmetic procedure.
